Gem Lake to Waugh Lake

We had a nice rolling hike from Gem to Waugh, good to have an easier day after the grueling start.

 A great dip of the feet in the stream before arriving at Waugh Lake, ooohhh, it felt so good!
 Back on the trail with Jen (and Daisy).
 First view of Waugh Lake, yes, this was the 3rd dam out of the first 3 lakes in the wilderness area!
 Some persistent smoke from a wildfire on the west side of the Sierras.
 Yup, Daisy was ready for bed, just the 2nd night with the UL tent and she knew where she wanted to be.

 Daisy did leave the tent after all to watch sunset with us.
 Here it comes!
 There were numerous tree stumps surrounding the lake, likely from pre-dam days.
And Daisy asked "time for bed?"

Grand Sawtooth Loop (almost)

Jen and I (Mary) set out on our hike into the Idaho Sawtooth Mountains from the Grand Jean trailhead at 1020 AM on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 (Day 1). We started in a light drizzle, with rain gear on and ominous clouds. This loop would typically start up to the Trail Chain Lakes and require 7-8 days. Due to having only 6 days available, we opted to cut a corner, and hike up the Baron Creek Trail to Baron Lakes. 1 hour and 20 min into our hike, we had the weather improve, so we stopped to get out of the rain gear. We hiked until 4:30 PM, getting into camp (large enough for one tent and one small tarp) in time to break camp just before the weather turned south again. We covered 9 miles and climbed more than 2,500 feet our first day. We woke on Day 2's (Thursday's) morning to fog in the valley. What a beautiful setting for our breakfast! This photo is a new vantage point of Glacier Grey. This is where is contacts Lago Grey. So large, you just can´t imagine it all! This is at a viewing point for calving from Glacier Grey. There is a large claved portion of glacier behind us. As you can see, sometimes it calves as large as a house. This photo is from Lago Pehoe of the Grande Paine. This is peak is the often thought of image of Torres del Paine. Here we are in front of the Grande Paine.

The High Uintas in Utah

The High Uintas Jen and I first went into the High Uintas together in 1999! Back then, we were rained and thunderstormed out from summitting King's Peak. Our hope this year was to see some new territory of the Uintas while also being able to summit King's Peak. I arrived to Moosehorn campground on the western edge of the Uintas at 0830 the morning of Friday August 5, 2022. There are 33 no reservation campsites at this location in the Uintas. I got one of the last 3 remaining camp sites at that time. We had a great spot, decent level location for the tent, decent spot to hang a tarp in preparation for the rain. Jen arrived that night, so I was able to settle into camp and take the occasional refuge from the rain. I also drove back to town at one point due to forgetting to pack a camp chair, found some GF snacks, and also some cider. We had a great little dinner and drinks at camp after another bout of rain.
